How to Find a Profitable Blog Topic Idea

Building a profitable blog, start with finding a blog topic.

But not just any blog topic, it must be a topic you are interested in and that can potentially attracts thousands of people to your blog.

Find a blog topic idea

When looking for a blog topic you are usually in one of the following situations:

  • You already have a topic idea for your blog
  • You don’t have any topic idea for your blog
  • You have many topic ideas and you don’t know which one to choose to start your blog

So let’s see exactly what you need to do in each situation:

You already have a topic idea for your blog

If you already have a topic idea, you want to make sure that if you start a blog about this topic, you’ll be able to make money.

If your topic is too narrow, you’ll have a hard time building a profitable blog.

Your blog topic must be broad enough to attract thousands of people to your blog so you can build a large community and sell them stuff.

To check the profitability of your blog topic, use both Google Keyword Planner and Google search.

#1 Google Keyword planner:

Google Keyword planner is a tool that gives you the number searches/month of specific keywords. You can use it to find out how popular your blog topic is.

To do so, create a free account and go to tools

Then search for keywords related to your topic.

Let’s say that your blog topic is drawing, you want to enter keywords like “How to draw”, “Learn to draw” “Drawing for beginners” ..

When analysing keywords, turn on “Only show ideas closely related to my search terms” under keyword options.

After clicking on get ideas, you will see the average monthly searches for every keyword related to your blog topic.

As you can see for this example, thousands of people are interested in drawing, which means that this blog topic is very likely to be profitable.

  • If for each keyword research, you get on average more than 3,000 searches/month then your blog topic is profitable.
  • If you get on average hundreds of searches/month, then your blog topic is probably too narrow and you need to find a broader topic.

To get a fair idea of the market size, you want to do your research with at least 20 keywords.

#2 Research your competition

Researching your competition is another great way to check the profitability of your blog topic.

Many new bloggers believe that having competition is a bad thing.

Truth is competition is great.

If there are both people blogging about your topic and companies selling stuff in your niche, it means that there is an existing market and so an opportunity for you to make money.

Finding out whether there is competition in your market is simple. Just google keywords related to your blog topic.

If you see blogs and authority sites like you see above (Tuts Plus and Creativebloq are authorities in the drawing market), it definitely means that your blog topic is profitable.

If you come across ads it’s also a good sign. When companies buy ads, they usually want to generate leads and sell product(s) and service(s), which implies that they are already making money and that you can start a profitable blog in this niche too.

Using Keyword planner and researching your competition are 2 excellent ways to find out whether your blog idea is worth pursuing.

Once you made sure that your blog topic is profitable, you need to:

  • Create your blog
  • Write your first blog posts
  • Build a highly engaged community
  • Drive traffic to your site
  • Monetize your blog

You don’t have any topic idea for your blog

If you want to start a profitable blog but don’t have any blog topic idea, here are a few things you should consider doing:

Share your passion/interests:

I’m pretty sure, you have some passion(s) and interest(s) in life. Maybe you love writing, dancing, cooking, playing video games…

Why not use it/them to come up with your blog topic?

To do so make a list of your passion(s) and interest(s) and choose one of them to start your blog. Then make sure that it’s profitable by using Keyword planner and researching your competition like I showed you before.

Teach people something

Your skills and knowledge are valuable to people. If you know things that help people and fulfil their needs, you will always be able to make money.

So ask yourself:

  • What am I good at?
  • What can I teach people?
  • What am I knowledgeable about?

It can be anything. Computer science, fashion design, cooking, happiness, health, history…

You can choose anything but make sure that it’s something that’s profitable.

Share your journey

I know that some of you don’t have any particular passion or think that they don’t have anything to teach. If that’s your case you can still start a profitable blog by sharing your journey to something.

You don’t need to have any passion or any skills, all you need is one objective.

Here are a few examples:

Your objective: You decided that by the end of the year, you’d be fitter and healthier by exercising and eating healthy.

Your blog: You share your journey on your blog by writing blog posts about what type of work out you do and by showing the results you get…

Your objective: You want to learn to build your own software from scratch.

Your blog: Share your journey on your blog by showing people exactly what you do to develop your software and teach people what you learn along the way.

Your objective: Travel the world in one year

Your blog: Share your journey on your blog by telling people how you prepare for your trip, how you manage your budget, what places to visit…

Again, before creating your blog, make sure that your blog topic is profitable by using Keyword planner and Google search.

You have many topic ideas and you don’t know which one to pick to start your blog

If you have many topic ideas and don’t know which one to choose to start your blog, use the following process:

Step 1: Make a list with all your topic ideas

Write on a piece of paper all your blog topic ideas

Step 2: Check which topic get more volume of searches/month

For each blog topic idea, choose 20 keywords related to your idea and do a search on keyword planner.

Then add up all the average searches/month of each keyword and divide them by 20 to get the average volume searches/month.

Do that with all your blog topics.

It looks something like this:

Average searches/month for blog topic idea 1: ( volume of searches/month of keyword 1 + volume of searches/month of keyword 2 + volume of searches/month of keyword 3 […] + volume of searches/month of keyword 20) / 20)

Average searches/month for blog topic idea 2: ( volume of searches/month of keyword 1 + volume of searches/month of keyword 2 + volume of searches/month of keyword 3 […] + volume of searches/month of keyword 20) / 20)

Average searches/month for blog topic idea 3: ( volume of searches/month of keyword 1 + volume of searches/month of keyword 2 + volume of searches/month of keyword 3 […] + volume of searches/month of keyword 20) / 20)

Then you want to compare the average searches/month of each blog topic idea and choose the one that gets more volume of searches/month. That way you will start a blog in a market that has a great potential.

Step 3: Check the competition

Before creating your blog, there is one last thing you need to do, which is to check whether there are existing competitors in your market.

So do a quick google research like I showed you before. If you see many other blogs and companies in the search results it’s a good sign. It means there is money to make.

You now know exactly what you need to do to find a profitable topic idea for your blog.
