How to create a website and become financially independent? (Part 1)

Here is the first article of a series of posts that will give you the step-by-step process to become financially independent with websites.

See also: How to create a website and become financially independent (announcement)

I will start this series with the very first step, which is the mindset and skills needed to become financially independent with a website.

I know you may now be thinking:

Yeah I don’t care about that, bring me the meat and potatoes! How do I create a website, how do I make money with it?

Well if I start to talk about mindset and skills, it’s because I consider them as the most important aspect before creating any website and earn money from it.
It’s actually the most important thing for every goal you want to reach successfully in life!

You may not realize it but covering that topic first will save you a LOT of time and money. Why? Because you will know exactly what it takes to make money with a website and if it’s for you.

So what does it take exactly to make money with a website?

The rule number one is patience, patience and patience!
You see, many people start creating websites thinking they might earn a lot of money in a short period of time. Truth is, many of them quit before even starting making one single dime.

The good news is you’re lucky! As you are reading this article you will know what to do to follow through. I will even write a small guide for you after this series of post that will help you to keep going day after day even during tough time (the guide will only be available on Facebook so you should like the Becomer fanpage to make sure you’ll get it). I think it would be really useful for you to read it as making money out of website may be discouraging sometimes.

If you are passionate about gardening and want to write about it that’s great, but that won’t be enough to make money.

If you want to make money out of a website you must get curious about things like marketing, SEO, social medias. In other words you will need knowledge in those fields.
If you don’t know anything about it, don’t worry that’s not Eishten stuff. Marketing, SEO and social medias are fancy words that refer to the ways you can get traffic on your website. But we’ll cover that later.

Websites are a particular kind of investments because it doesn’t require a lot of money to get started (more or less $60/y with the host and domain) but require a lot of time. So time investment is pretty high.

If you want to make money with a website you will need to reach many people and to do so you will need frequent and quality content. As you might guess it takes a lot of time.

When I started my first website, I set my mind right and considered my website as a part time job, because it really is when it comes to make money out of it.

This point is related to time investment. If you want to make money with a website you will need passion. Think of the content you will have to write, the community you will have to interact with. Without passion you won’t have anything that drive you on a long term basis.
So you need both passion for the topic of your website and passion to promote it. A lot of bloggers only say that you need passion for the topic. I completely agree but in my opinion you also need passion to promote it. If you create great content but nobody see it, it will be fairly hard to make some money.
Maybe you are now telling yourself:

How the hell can I be passionate about promotion? I am only passionate about (topic) and nothing else!

You see I use to think that too, but then something extraordinary happened. When you start promoting your content you will see that people from all over the world will start reading what you write. They will start commenting, interacting, sharing…in my opinion there is nothing more exciting! It’s pretty hard not to get passionate about it.

I mentioned before that to make money out of a website you will need to feed it regularly with content. The content you will produce will also need to be valuable to your readers. To be so you will need to be creative. It may be the creation of original content, nice videos, cool drawings, humorous communication…
Don’t be scared to do something different people like it and Google too.
Because the best thing about a website is that you have a complete freedom to produce whatever you want and be paid for it!

Nice start to the series! Our first site at Budget Breakaway has been great fun to build but you’re right, the time investment is much bigger than you’d ever expect!

This is the truth. You must have a passion for all that is included in the process. Content! Marketing! Creativity of Website Creations!
You know that it’s for you, if you would do it for FREE.

I am looking forward to reading more. I started my website one month ago and so far I am doing well, but I could always use more advice :).

Great post! I love that you start out with a very realistic approach by focusing on patience and the time commitment. I am currently working on a releasing a website this summer and am quickly learning the vast amount of time it can take to make that dream a reality. Love the site man, keep it up!

Couldn’t agree more regarding the fact that you absolutely must have passion for the topic you choose to develop your website around. Without a burning to desire to explore the topic from every conceivable angle, you’ll simply grow tired of the endeavor and begin to look at it more as a chore than anything else.

Passion is huge- but doing the work on a daily basis beats it- you gotta do the work every day to give people a reason to come back
